Audrey's New Dress.
I did it! I sewed a dress! I know all of you experienced seamstresses are rolling your eyes right now but to me, this is HUGE! I've sewn in the past. Curtains, pillows, aprons, blankets. But never a real piece of clothing. Never something someone would wear out of the house.
Miss Audrey has what you would call a "difficult body type" to dress. It's nearly impossible to find clothes on the rack that fit + flatter her short and round physique. I decided sewing a few basic summer dresses would be our best option and I knew Erin from Sutton Grace would have some great advice. Erin suggested this Oliver + S pattern. She said it would be a good beginner sewing project and she was right. The pattern was easy to follow and even better, it was FREE! Thanks, Erin!
Instead of using a trim fabric for the yoke and straps of the dress like the pattern suggested, I opted to make the entire dress from linen. Once the dress was sewn I embellished it with an alternating color banner also made from linen (inspired by Susan's bunting pillow).
I'm really happy with the results. The dress fits Audrey well and I learned a few things while making it.
#1 Never, EVER sew with a baby crawling around. They are magnets to the foot pedal.
#2 A project that should take a couple of hours takes me a couple of days. ( I over think. and procrastinate.)
#3 There is something magical about creating something useful + pretty from a heap of fabric. Magical, I tell you.

it looks great!!
ReplyDeleteLove the banner idea. Audrey looks so stinking cute in the pictures. I can't believe how much hair she has. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteoh, how i agree with you on the magic! it is rewarding, isn't it? and so worth all that toddler-peddaling and procrastination to reach that magic moment at the end!
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job! She looks absolutely adorable! I love the banner idea & making the whole dress out of linen. So impressive & beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAdorable dress! I love it
ReplyDeletegreat job! i wish i had the guts to try and sew. i have a lovely sewing machine, that has only hemmed curtains and made throw pillows. i think it's lonely!
ReplyDeleteLove it! You did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteTotally adorable ♥
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loathe sewing... hates it I say... I've been working on an advent calendar since December because I don't like working on it. Hopefully I'll finish it by THIS December.

ReplyDelete+++
i'm hoping that your new clothes sewing skills means you'll set your machine up next to mine for the summer.
love, lindsay
Such cute results! I tend to take on sewing projects that are WAY over my head, and then I silently curse the entire way through it! My babies stay away from the foot pedal, but my 2 year old loves to run in and hit the reverse stitch button while I'm sewing. And she's so quick, I can never catch her in time! Lots of little backstitches on all of my projects!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link! My daughter has the same short-and-round shape; I'll have to try one! Yours looks wonderful.
ReplyDeletecongratulations!! i agree, that is HUGE! i am working on my first curtains now, and i have to walk away b/c i get overwhelmed! good for you :)
ReplyDeleteps - jammy pants are pretty straight-forward, too.
Congrats! It looks fantastic on sweet little Audrey.
ReplyDeleteThat is so adorable. Yuu are inspiring me to give it a try too. Even though I now know how to thread my machine and do simple mending, I still have never made anything from a pattern.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I've not been a huge fan of gladiator sandals but Audrey is changing my mind. They looks soooo cute on her little feet.
That bunting pattern is killing me. And her little stance. LOVE.
