2010 Word Update.

Friends.  Have you checked your calendars?  It's the middle of June.  Time is flying, no?  I'm continuing to work on my word for the year.  (If you're new to this space, you can read what word I chose here and my last update post here.)

Lately I've been learning:

-To play the guitar.  I finished my first round of group guitar lessons a couple of weeks ago.  My plan is to practice, practice, practice this summer so I can move on to the "intermediate" class in the fall.  It's not going to be easy, playing the guitar is tough stuff, but I've got myself a fantastic teacher and a really inspiring friend.  Plus, my fingers are all callused over so there's no turning back now.

-Gardening is a lesson in trial and error.  After the very successful completion of our raised garden boxes, Ryan and I were eager to get things planted.  We planted strawberries, brussel sprouts, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, cilantro, peppers, beans, peas and spinach.  The problem?  Plant placement.  The row of cilantro went between the tomatoes.  Big mistake.  The tomato plants are now HUGE and the cilantro isn't getting enough sun.  The peas + beans were planted side by side.  The problem?  Both of these veggies like to climb.  They're getting entangled and top heavy. (our bamboo supports aren't working.)  We're making notes + determined to right these wrongs next year.  Your tips would be very much appreciated too, dears.

-To sew clothes!  I know I've already devoted an entire post to my first clothing sewing project, but I had to add this to the list.  My mother and I are taking a road trip next week to get our hands on some pretty fabric (this town's got nothing!) so I'm predicting more sewing posts in the future.

Have you been learning anything new and interesting?   I'd love to hear about it.

  1. I've been learning how to give pigs shots! Oh, and how to take their temperature.

    You're jealous aren't you?

  2. -guitar is hard! So I applaud any learning you get there. I got so frustrated with it, I gave up, but I guess I'm not musically inclined either.

-Gardening is fun minus the weeding. and the icky bugs.... I enjoy that new hobby but am still adjusting to a couple of things.

-and I'm LOVE to sew, but I can't do it very well or very long without becoming frustrated.

Good luck in all of your new endeavors!

  3. oh, thank you for the reminder. didn't we just come up with those words the other day? now we're expected to be half a year into living them? sheesh!

guitar IS hard. you go, girl.

i'm learning photoshop. and i think i'm in love...

  4. I have learnt how to knit (local crafty older lady taught me), pot pretty planters for my porch (my mum has been my teacher) and sew and patchwork.
I have also enjoyed learning some recipes from my mum. It has been good bonding time for us.
My word was nurture mainly because we were hoping to enlarge our family but whist we wait (yes you guessed nothing happening yet!) I have tried to nurture the family I have already a bit better.

  5. I don't think I have the patience for playing the guitar or sewing. Good for you! Those are both great talents to have.

  6. it's ONLY june & look what you've already learned & can cross off of your list. most people(well,me) wait until november to tackle our resolutions. you rock.
    love, lindsay

  7. I'm taking a silver ring-makin' class next Thursday at the Univeristy with a friend! One of the things my husband and I liked about our town when we moved here was that it had a great college, but neither of us has taken advantage of it yet! Apparently, they have these awesome workshops through the art department, and I want to start taking one each term! Next on my list is Beginning Glass Blowing. Don't ask me why, but I've always wanted to learn how to blow glass!

  8. I've learned that I CAN get through the day even after my baby decides that staying up all night is a good idea.

  9. wondering what else you will "learn" this year. what ever it is...teach me too.

  10. I really (really) love that you are learning to play the guitar. That is something that I always wanted to do, but unfortunately will not be able to do (in this lifetime.). And cheers to all the other things you're learning! Sounds like it is shaping up to be a wonderful year!

I am learning how to walk with a cane...it doesn't sound all that great, but it is absolutely the best thing right now. Hooray for modern medicine!
